John O’Brien, MS ATC
– Head Athletic Trainer

O.B. brings 25 years of athletic training experience to Merced College. He is a Certified Athletic Trainer through the National Athletic Trainers' Association. He currently serves the California Community College Athletic Trainers' Association as a sport repesentative for women's basketball. O.B. has his undergraduate degree from CSU, Sacramento and his graduate degree for the United States Sports Academy in Daphe, AL. Previous to athletic training, OB has experience as a football offensive line coach and head coach at the collegiate level. In 1983, he was hired as an offensive line coach here at Merced College and part-time as an assistant to then Head Athletic Trainer Pat Mahoney. By the following year, OB assumed the head athletic training position and has remained in that position ever since. In addition to his regular duties, he now has special interests in the rehabilitation of athletes with myofascial restrictions. Having studied with John Barnes, the founder of myofacial release techniques, OB brings a new technique and perspective for the rehabilitation of Merced College's student/athletes.

Chris Barrett, MS ATC NASM-PES

Chris came on staff as an athletic trainer in 1997. He is a Certified Athletic Trainer through the National Athletic Trainers' Assocition and a Performance Enhancement Specialist with the National Academy of Sports Medicine. He recieved his undergraduate degree from CSU, Stanislaus, and his graduate degree from the United States Sports Academy in Daphne, AL. Chris has written much of the new sports medicine curriculum at Merced College and is currently the instructor for Introduction to Athletic Training. He has a special interest in injury implications as the result of throwing mechanics in baseball pitchers and is using a more functional approach in injury rehabilitation.

Scott Lemberger, ATC

Scott came on staff as an athletic trainer in 1996. He is a Certified Athletic Trainer through the National Athletic Trainers' Association. Scott recieved his undergraduate degree from University of the Pacific. Scott has a special intrest in myofacial release techniques. Scott also has a background and special interest in the rehabilitation of martial art athletes.

The athletic training staff currently cares for 10 intercollegiate sports, including football, consisting of approximately 250 student/athletes. The athletic training facility is located in Field House A on the east side of the swimming pool.
