Merced College Theater Presents:
Antigone
by Jean Anouilh
Directed by Carin Heidelbach
at the Merced College Theater

The Merced College Theater Arts Department will present Jean Anouilh's contemporary update of Sophocles' classic play, Antigone.

In Anouilh's contemporary update of this classic story, Oedipus' children continue the tale of heartbreak and redemption with one daughter's odyssey to restore basic human rights to the people of Thebes.  Antigone is a heroine for all time in her desire to bring human dignity to her ill-fated family and her country.  Amidst brutal civil war, and going against her tenacious uncle and Thebes' new ruler Creon, Antigone takes on the autocracy, demanding a proper burial for her rebel brother's body.  She soon finds the cost of human rights to be perhaps more than she bargained for.

Anouilh's updated post-WWII version blends modern language and modern themes of war and civil rights with Sophocles' mythic story.  Two-thousand years later, the themes in Antigone ring true to modern life.

Featured in this production are Helen Brinich-Barnes as Antigone, Joshua Davey as Creon, Georgia Kent as Ismene, and Jason Best as Haemon.  Zayda Gonzales, Ben Calabrese, Gerardo Larios, Yeng Xiong, Frank Ochoa, Lance Echols, Betty Haynes, Julian Bremer, Margarita Robles, Ericcka Hughes, and Kim Carpenter round out the stellar student cast.  Antigone is directed by Merced College faculty member, Carin Heidelbach.
