“An Evening at the Cotton Club” is the theme for the Merced College Foundation 2nd Annual Scholarship Banquet

Merced College will host its second Annual Scholarship Banquet on Thursday, Oct. 14 at St. Patrick’s Parish Hall. The event, hosted by the Merced College Foundation, will raise funds for student scholarships. Last year’s banquet raised more than $29,000 for Merced College students who will transfer to UC Merced.

“The scholarships will be granted based on eligibility to enroll at the UC, and local residency,” said Dr. Benjamin T. Duran, president of Merced College. Currently, 40 students are participating in a program that allows concurrent enrollment at Merced College and UC Merced.

A generous gift of $125,000 was donated to the Merced College Foundation by the UC Merced Committee and the Merced Community Scholarship Association. The Foundation plans to match these funds to create a $250,000 endowment that will meet the needs of many local students transferring to UC Merced.

“This gift is a remarkable example of our community making an investment in our students,” Dr. Duran said. “We are grateful for this wonderful gift and we look forward to helping our students for years to come.”

Last year’s banquet was a sold out event and this year may be no exception. The theme of this year’s banquet is “An Evening at the Cotton Club” and will feature jazz and blues diva Cheryl Lockett accompanied by the John Albano Hot Club Quartet. Social hour begins at 6 p.m., followed by dinner catered by Pea Soup Andersen’s. Complimentary dinner wine and door prizes are part of the package. Tickets are $150 per couple and can be obtained by calling the Merced College Foundation at 381-6470 or 381-6471. Corporate table rates are also available.

So, plan for a sentimental journey through the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s as a special guest of the “Cotton Club.” More information can be viewed on the Merced College website at http://www.mccd.edu/cottonclub.
