Los Banos Campus Receives First Major Gift

October 21, 2004

Merced College President Dr. Benjamin T. Duran has announced that the Los Banos Campus has received its first major gift start the fund-raising drive for the new campus.

“Today, I am proud to announce that we have received a gift of $100,000 from the Jan Falasco Living Trust,” Dr. Duran said. “This gift will be earmarked to build our library collection and to purchase textbooks for student attending the Los Banos Campus.”

Dr. Duran said that half of the gift will be endowed to provide income that will assist students with textbook purchases. The balance will be used over the course of several years to enhance the book collection in the new library.

“We are truly indebted to Jan Falasco for her generosity, for her investment in our new campus, and for her support of students in the Los Banos area” Dr. Duran said. “This is a wonderful gift that will have a lasting effect on our ability to deliver the best instruction possible for our students.”

According to Dr. Anne Newins, Dean of the Los Banos Campus, Merced College will recognize Mrs. Falasco by naming part of the new library in her honor.

“On behalf of our students, I would like to acknowledge Jan Falasco for her generous spirit of giving,” Dr. Newins said. “I am profoundly touched by her caring and her compassion for our students.”

The Los Banos Campus has received several other gifts at the start of its fund raising campaign. These include a pledge of $10,000 from County Bank. The campaign has also received generous gifts from Los Banos Attorney and Merced College Trustee Eugene Vierra, Dr. Anne Newins, Los Banos instructor Susan Kimoto and June Kimoto on behalf of the Tad Kimoto Memorial, and Judith Diedrich. According to Dr. Newins, several local service organizations, including Soroptimists, Rotary, and the Delta Kappa Gamma Iota Lambda Chapter have also pledged support.
