Merced College Hires New Vice President
June 22, 2005
After an exhaustive national search, the Merced College Board of Trustees has announced the selection of Dr. Anne Newins as the College’s third vice president for Student Services. The announcement was made during the June 21 meeting of the Board of Trustees. Dr. Newins takes the reigns from Dr. Allan Grimsby, who retired June 17.
Dr. Newins has served as the College’s Dean of the Los Banos Campus since 1994. She has held numerous positions at the College since 1985, including director of the Re-Entry Center and director of the Tech Prep program.
“I am pleased and excited to be chosen for this position,” Dr. Newins said. “I have worked with many of the Student Services staff and respect the quality of their work and dedication. My goal is to build upon their accomplishments, as well as supporting the District as a whole.”
As the Los Banos Campus Dean, Dr. Newins helped to guide the Merced Community College District’s successful$11 million bond campaign to build a new campus in the city. She has continued to work with the District’s architects in the development of the new campus’ physical plan. A groundbreaking ceremony is set for July 11 and the campus is expected to be built by 2007.
“Dr. Newins has certainly shown that she is capable of handling anything that comes her way,” said Board of Trustees Chairman Dr. Les McCabe. “She accomplishes her work with diligence, perseverance and even-handedness. She is a very talented individual and I expect that she will bring to this new position the same dedication she has shown throughout her career at Merced College.”
Dr. Newins earned her doctorate in education in 1992 from the University of La Verne. She holds a master’s degree in Guidance and Personnel Services from North Carolina State University.
“I am delighted that Anne will be joining the Executive Administrative team,” said Merced College President Dr. Benjamin T. Duran.
“It is especially gratifying to see her emerge as the successful candidate after the nationwide search. She has led the Los Banos Campus with great distinction and grace. She has a great sense of humor and her easy-going demeanor will be an asset in this new position. I have full confidence in her ability to perform in this new position with confidence, clarity, and boundless energy.
“And, it’s always nice to see someone from our own college family emerge as the best candidate. That means we have good people working at Merced College.
