Merced College Will Break Ground On New Campus In Los Banos

July 7, 2005

After more than a decade of planning, ground will finally be broken on a new campus of Merced College in Los Banos.

College officials and dignitaries will use shovels to turn the soil on the new permanent campus, located on Highway 152 west of the City of Los Banos on Monday, July 11 at 10 a.m. Those interested in attending the groundbreaking are asked to meet at the site of the current campus (16570 S. Mercey Springs Road) by 9:30 a.m. where vans will transport everyone to the groundbreaking site. The public is invited to attend a reception in the library of the current campus at 11 a.m.

The ceremony will also recognize members of the Founders’ Fund, donors who have given gifts to support the development of the campus.

About 120 acres of land was donated to Merced College by Larry Anderson of Stonecreek Development for the site of the new campus. Area residents voted overwhelmingly in 2002 for a local bond measure to fund construction. The donation of land and the local bond funds will be used with state funds to build the campus.

With the completion of the initial phase of the campus, Merced College will be able to offer more classes in Los Banos.

“As the local communities continue to grow, the Los Banos Campus will also be able to grow to meet the needs of our students,” said Dr. Anne Newins, Dean of the Los Banos Campus. “We are grateful to our Founders’ Fund donors and to members of our community who supported our bond campaign. This historic occasion would not have been possible without their assistance.”
