Merced College Concert Band Performs ‘Winter Wonderland’

November 29, 2005

The Merced College Concert Band is preparing another great holiday concert. Each year the Concert Band performs classic Christmas songs and includes many new surprises, just to get everyone in the right spirit to celebrate the holidays.

“This is really going to be a fun concert,” said conductor Mark Steven Doiel. “There will some old favorites, but we’re going to throw in a few new compositions that are sure to become classics.”

The “Winter Wonderland” concert takes place on Friday, Dec. 2 at 8 p.m. in the Merced College Theater. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $8 or at the door for $10.

“We have a festive evening planned,” Doiel said. “The concert will offer a variety of traditional holiday favorites that we have all grown to love, as well as new holiday music especially composed for the concert band. And, we’ll end the evening with our annual sing-a-long. That’s always fun.”

Some of the selections include “Christmas Across the World,” “Good King Wenceslas,” “Carol of the Shepherds,” and “Away in the Manger.” New pieces include “The Polar Express,” “Quaere Verum,” “Santa Meets the Big Bands.”

“We’ll perform several medleys that will include selections from “Rock Around the Christmas Tree,” Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer,” and “Jingle Bells,” Doiel said. “It’s a little of something for everyone.”

Tickets may be purchased by calling the Merced College Theater Box Office at 384-6284. Tickets are also available at the following outlets: Merced College Community Services, Aloha Floral at the Merced Mall, Applewood Gifts at 510 W. 18th Street, and Seraphim Café at 2801 Winton Way in Atwater.
