March 22, 2006 Science on Saturday will kick off its fourth successful season with a lecture titled “Our Universe: Watch Out!” on April 1, at Delhi High School, located at 16881 Schendel Avenue in Delhi. Explore the latest research describing how the Universe can be a wild place with exploding stars, killer asteroids, colliding galaxies, deadly black holes and gamma-ray bursts that zap planets, and perhaps some less pleasant wild life! Science on Saturday (SOS) is a three Saturday series of free lectures and demonstrations targeted for middle and high school students. Presentations are aligned with the California Science Standards and topics are selected from the forefront of science and technology research in a variety of disciplines. The second lecture is titled “Biodefense: Detection to Protect the Nation” and will be held at Merced College on April 22. Learn how infectious disease poses a more serious threat to humanity than nuclear war. The third lecture is titled “Repairing DNA: Our Best Defense Against Cancer,” and will be held at Los Banos High School on May 6. Learn about the ways cells repair DNA, the mutagenic consequences of unprepared DNA damage, and the fates of people born without DNA repair proteins. Science On Saturday 2006 is presented by Merced College, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Science & Technology Education Program, Merced County Office of Education, Merced Union High School District, Los Banos Unified School District, Delhi Unified School District, and UC Merced. All lectures begin at 9:30 a.m. and end at 10:30 a.m. Seating is on a first come first serve basis and there is no pre-registration. All lectures of free of charge.
