Merced College Hosts Commencement Exercises 

May 4, 2006

The 43 rd Annual Commencement Exercises at Merced College will be observed on Friday, May 26 at 7:30 p.m. in Stadium '76/Don Odishoo Field. More than 560 students will earn Associate of Arts or Science degrees and Certificates of Completion.

This year's Commencement Address, "Five Rules for Success," will be delivered by Los Banos Mayor Mike Amabile. The Student Address will be delivered by Alexis Vierra. Her address is titled "A Brighter Future."

The Merced College Commencement Band, conducted by Mark Steven Doiel, will perform the traditional "Pomp and Circumstance." The Merced College Chamber Singers, under the direction of Curtis Nelson, will perform the "Star Spangled Banner" and "Just One Dream."

Also scheduled during Commencement is the announcement of the Outstanding Instructor of the Year, presented by the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Graduating Outstanding Student Awards will be announced by Dr. John Spevak, vice president for Instruction, and the conferring of degrees will be conducted by Eugene Vierra, chairperson of the Merced College Board of Trustees.

Student speaker Alexis Vierra is from Turlock . She is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society and has been accepted to attend both UC Davis and UC Santa Barbara for the fall 2006 semester. A student-athlete, she is a member of the Merced College softball team, winners of the 2006 Central Valley Conference Championship.

Mike Amabile, a Merced College and CSU Fresno alumnus, has been mayor of Los Banos since 1994. He has owned Espanas Restaurant in Los Banos for 25 years. Mayor Amabile has received numerous awards and honors, including the Los Banos Enterprise Readers' Choice award for the Most Honest Public Official. He was a Merced College Alumnus of the Year in 1997. Mayor Amabile serves on Local Agency Formation Commission as its chairperson and is also chairperson of the City/County Relations Mayor's Board.
