Shelly Tafoya Chosen as Merced College
Classified Employee of the Year

May 24 , 2006

A Hawaiian Luau was the theme as Merced College held its annual Classified Staff Day at Lake Yosemite April 20. During the festivities, Shelly Tafoya, an 8-year veteran of Merced College was honored as the 2006 Classified Staff Employee of the Year.

After working 18 years for the County of Merced, Shelly took a part-time position at Merced College in Vocational Student Support Services in 1998. Nearly two years later, she was selected for the full-time position of Operations and Maintenance Coordinator and has been with O & M ever since.

From the moment I first set foot on campus, I knew I was going to like it here,” said Shelly. “The diversity of people and the relaxed atmosphere of a college campus are just a couple of reasons why I enjoy working here so much. As the O & M Coordinator, I am usually the first contact a person has with our area when they have a concern or request. I work with a wonderful group of dedicated, hard working people who help make my job so much easier.”

Shelly has lived in Merced for the past 30 years, having moved here from Fort Worth, Texas. She and her husband, Chris, have been married 24 years and Chris recently retired from Merced County. They have two sons, Chase and Kyle. Chase is finishing his AA at Merced College and works locally at Best Buy. Kyle is completing his sophomore year at Golden Valley High School.

Beyond working and taking care of her family, Shelly likes to read, travel, and especially enjoys spending her time with family and friends.

Shelly is well deserving of this special recognition and her quiet, poised demeanor showed through when she was asked to say a few words upon receipt of her award and she responded, “I work with a great group of people in Maintenance and Operations - they make me look good. Thank you.”

Congratulations to Shelly Tafoya from the Merced College administration, faculty, and fellow classified staff personnel.
