The Merced College CalWORKs program serves students and their families by providing educational and career opportunities combined with an array of high-quality support services that enable students to complete their education goals, find meaningful employment, and a successfully transition into the workforce. Through collaboration and advocacy with our college and community partners, we prepare a segment of California's workforce by promoting the economic self-sufficiency of CalWORKs students through the attainment of a higher education. California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids (CalWORKs) is a state funded welfare-to-work program designed to help individuals on public assistance. Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), is a cash aid program (welfare) for parents who meet income guidelines and have a child at home under the age of 18. In August 1997, AB1542 established CalWORKs as California's version of welfare reform. AB1542 describes the activities of agencies to assist current welfare recipients in their movement towards employment. With the passage of Senate bill 1104 in 2003-2004 CalWORKs students may be able to participate in education and training for up to 60 months. All CalWORKs participants are required to engage in a combination of work related activities for a minimum of 40 hours a week as described in there individual welfare to work plan. This plan may include attendance at a California Community College in a program that the county Human Services Agency agrees will help lead the participant towards unsubsidized employment. The college must affirm the students' participation is satisfactory. Who is Eligible for our services? To be considered eligible for our services you must be a Merced College student who is currently a TANF recipient, who has and/or who is developing a Welfare To Work plan.
