Course:            PHED 10F   FLEXIBILITY & CARDIOVASCULAR FITNESS

                        2 units: 6 hours lab

Prerequisite/Advisory:   None

 

Course Description:

Practical applications of all aspects of flexibility and cardiovascular conditioning are presented and performed. A system of class presentation is used to insure a gradual, safe, and total physiological adaptation of the student to exercise. A gradual, progressive, safe, and eventual total body fitness experience is pursued. Geriatric fitness adaptations are emphasized. The course may be repeated three times.

 

Course Objectives:

The student should be able to:

1. Identify principles of cardiovascular fitness.

2. Explain techniques used for warm-up, stretching, and cool-down.

3. Obtain and record target heart rate and pulse information.

4. Examine personal nutrition.

5. Assess and analyze personal heart rate and pulse information.

6. Explain technique for measuring distance walked by time.

 

Course Requirements:

All students are required to submit a record of their semester activities. The following areas must be contained in the record:

1. Record the time of one lap around the track in the stadium at the beginning and at the end of the semester.

2. Record the technique for measuring distance walked with one’s wrist watch.

3. Schedules for warm-up, stretching, work-out program, and cool-down.

4. Work-out schedule for re-entry after a short or long lay-off from exercise.

5. Personal nutrition information.

6. Dates, times, weather; etc., during workouts.

7. Target heart rate and pulse rate – conditioning schedule.

 

Clothing/Shoes:

Shoes must be designed for a workout activity. Purchase walking shoes of good quality.

 

 Grading:

Students will receive grades commensurate with the workouts recorded and knowledge of the course concepts.
