The Great American Smokeout

If you smoke, make a plan and set the Great American Smokeout, November 20, 2008, as your quit date. By calling the American Cancer Society Quitline® at 1-800-227-2345, people who plan to quit will be able to speak with a trained counselor and receive free, confidential counseling.

A representative from the Merced County Department of Public Health, Tobacco Prevention Program, will be in the Quad on Thursday, November 20th from 9am-12pm to offer information, tips, and provide interested persons with local cessation class schedules.

Please remember to respect others when smoking, and be aware of the following Merced College Administrative Procedure:

ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURE 2610

Smoking is permitted in all outdoor areas under the following conditions:

1. All smoking materials and matches are deposited into a receptacle designated for disposal of smoking materials.
2. A “no smoking” sign is not posted in the area and it is not within 20 feet of covered corridors, doors, elevators, stairways, stairwells and open windows.
3. A safety and/or fire threat is not created by smoking.
4. Smoking is not done in college vehicles. (A “no smoking” statement will be included on vehicle request forms and a “no smoking” sign will be installed in all District vehicles.)
5. Smoke will not enter any District or District rented building. (Language will be included in rental agreements stating that smoking is not permitted indoors or near any entrances.)
