Adding Spanish Characters

ñ

You can easily add the International US Keyboard which supports Spanish language keyboard to your Windows® operating system. This makes it very easy to use Spanish accents, exclamation and interrogation marks amongst other things.

Here is how you can do this:

  1. From the START menu click on Run and type intl.cpl and click OK (An alternative way is to go to the Control Panel and Regional and Language Options)
  2. Select the Language tab
  3. Click on the Details button
  4. Select the Settings tab
  5. Click the ADD button
  6. In the first box select English (United States) - see first image
  7. In the second box elect United States-International - see first image
  8. Click "OK" twice to close the screens

You can also make United States international the Default input language.

This is an excellent option if you do not want to change keyboards continuously. Accents are used the same way as in the Spanish keyboard. However, the Ñ is done as an accent (shift, ~, N). Try it!

To type the special characters, two keystrokes are required. To type the á, you need only strike the apostrophe key and then the letter a. The other characters are just as easy:

á = ' + a
é = ' + e
í = ' + i
ó = ' + o
ú = ' + u
ñ = ~ + n
ü = " + u

To type the special punctuation characters, you need to hold down on the Alt key while you strike the appropriate punctuation mark. On some keyboards, only one of the two Alt keys will work for this.

¡ = Alt (hold down) + !
¿ = Alt (hold down) + ?
