Fall Course Offerings
ANIMAL CARE
Canine Obedience Boot Camp – Beginning dog obedience and Canine Good
Citizen test. This class will teach dog owners how to train their dogs in
basic obedience such as sit, down, stay and recall. The class will also be a
Canine Good Citizen test. The dogs will learn not to jump, bark, or be
aggressive. At the end of the six weeks, a test will be done, and if the
handlers and their dogs pass, a certificate will be awarded. ARTS, HOBBIES & CRAFTS
Shakespeare and the Ancient World – This course will overview four
Shakespeare plays. Two of them located in ancient Greece and two in what is
now western Turkey. The plays include Timons of Athens, A Midsummer
Night’s Dream, The Comedy of Errors, and Troilus and Cressida.
The course will include taped guest lecture series by experts from Dartmouth
College and Penn State University.
Stained Glass Mosaic Project – Make your own stained glass checker/chess
boards with customized framed designs (sport teams, floral, etc.) or a
“Lazy Susan” for your kitchen table. These make wonderful family heirlooms
or a gift for someone special. You will learn the basic skills in the art
of mosaics during this four week course. Square
Dance Know How – Learn the basics of square dancing during this weekly
open enrollment course. Square Dancing is a social activity and a great low
impact exercise comparable to walking two miles during a two hour session.
It also stimulates the mind while learning how to listen and respond to
calls. This class is open enrollment and registration is mandatory. HEALTH AND FITNESS
Fitness Boot Camp – Get into great shape with an efficient workout that
will burn lots of calories while strengthening your muscles. Every workout
is different and you will constantly challenge yourself. This course is for
anyone who wants to get a grip on their fitness regime. The
Biggest Loser – Interested in a little friendly competition while
shedding fat? Based on the popular television show, you will be competing
to lose pounds and inches with your class peers (based on body fat
percentage). Everyone will be a winner but the ultimate “biggest loser”
will receive a CASH PRIZE. Each class will focus on developing
healthy lifestyle changes including help setting up healthy menus, exercise
plans, as well as proven weight loss techniques. You will also participate
in a rigorous workout, so come dressed appropriately. Note: Only weight

Children’s Choir – Expose your child to the joys of making music through
the Merced Children’s Choir hosted by the College’s Department of Music.
Children ages 8 – 12 will spend 15 weeks studying music culminating in a
public performance. The Choir will study the basics of vocal production and
technique, music reading, rhythm, and diction. Fall
Youth Water Polo – This class is designed to introduce and review basic
water polo skills: ball handling, shooting, offensive set-up, defensive
set-up, and game strategies. Participants must be able to swim 25 yards

Holiday Baseball Camp – Join the Merced College Baseball Coaching Staff
for winter camp. The camp is for boys & girls ages 7-16 and provides
individual and team instruction in all phases of baseball. For more

Courses are from 8:00am - 4:00pm, in Building 4, Merced College

Public in One Day – Start your own business, provide customer service,
earn additional income and/or get recommissioned. This one-day intensive
seminar will teach you the new legislation, how to pass the “new” test,
identify document signers, keep a journal, fill out certificates and avoid
lawsuits. The class includes a practice Notary Public Exam as well as the
official exam. You must be present for the entire course of instruction and
be at least 18 years of age. Bring to class a proper ID (license or state
issued ID), two #2 pencils, and a check or money order payable to the
Secretary of State for $40 for new applicants and renewals. SPECIAL INTEREST Kick
the Habit: Smoking Cessation Program –
Resource rich, medically sound,
evaluated and validated…. This program is for those who want the opportunity
to gain freedom from cigarettes. The program uses simple methods proven to
help overcome the addiction to nicotine. We’ll discuss coping skills, proper
use of medication, recover and grief, relapse prevention, self –monitoring,
and stress management. SPORTS & OUTDOOR RECREATION Golf
for All Ages – Whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced
player, your game will improve. This four week golf lesson course will
cover full swing, short game, basic rules, and general golf course
etiquette. Bring your own clubs or borrow one of ours.
Martial Arts and Self Defense – Whether you are looking to build
self-esteem, gain self defense practices, and/or get in better shape – this
six week course is for you. You will also improve your balance,
coordination, speed, and flexibility while using biomechanics and natural
reflex motions. This course is for all ages! Scuba
Certification Class – This PADI Open Water class is a fun opportunity to
learn more about the diverse underwater world in a safe and relaxed
environment. You must be 15 years or older for full certification and 10
years or older to receive the Junior Open Water Certification. The course
will consist of Knowledge Development, study reviews, pool skills
development, and four ocean dives. All students will be asked to
demonstrate basic waterskill comfort by swimming 200 yards. You will also
float and tread water for 10 minutes. Fee
$120 plus $205 lab fee - Lab fee includes your PADI Open Water Manual, dive
tables, log book, certification card, and rental gear. Each student must
have their own personal snorkeling equipment - mask, fins, snorkel,
boots and gloves. A list of hotel and camping accommodations will be
provided at orientation. Overnight stay in Monterey is not included in your
fee and you must make your own reservations (we may arrange class
transportation for a minimal fee). If you have any questions, please do not
