I get an error when logging in to Canvas

Some users may receive errors when logging into Canvas, which is Merced College’s learning management system. If you receive an error, read below for more information.

  1. Error: "Unable to Locate Your Information"
  2. Error: "Failed to Log In" / "Canvas doesn't have an account for user"
  3. Error: "We're sorry, but an error has occurred."
  4. Error: "The username you entered cannot be identified."

1. Error:  "Unable to Locate Your Information"

Why you are getting this error:

During your login to Canvas, our system was unable to find your "CCC-ID", which is a system-wide ID number normally generated for each student when they submit an application to Merced College using the OpenCCC system.  This can happen if the student last submitted an application before the OpenCCC system began generating CCCID's for new students.  I can also happen if something occurred to prevent a student's CCC-ID from being associated with the student's other application information.. 

What to do:

You'll need to login to the OpenCCC system to retrieve an existing CCCID, or create a new one if you don't already have one. 

  •  If you already have an OpenCCC account, enter your username and password to login.
  •  If you have an OpenCCC account, but have forgotten either your OpenCCC username or password, click on the "Forgot?" link to retrieve that information and use it to login to the OpenCCC system.
  •  If you do not already have an OpenCCC account, click on the link to create a new account. Once you have created a new OpenCCC account, a new CCCID number will be generated for you.

Once you have logged into the OpenCCC system and retrieved an existing CCCID or created a new one, you should then be able to login to Canvas without seeing this OpenCCC screen again.  If you continue to see this screen at login, please call the Student Help Desk at (209) 381-6565 for assistance.

2. Error:  "Failed to Log In" / "Canvas doesn't have an account for user"

Why you are getting this error:

Your account may exist but has not yet been loaded into Canvas. 

What to do:

Contact the Merced College Student HelpDesk about this error.

3. Error:  "We're sorry, but an error has occurred"

Why you are getting this error:

The system cannot locate your unique CCID. Your CCID is a unique identification number generated for you by the Chancellor's office apps. If your CCID is missing, your profile is incomplete and you will not be able to login to Canvas. 

What to do:

Follow instructions given in the error message and contact the Chancellor's office at 877-247-4836 or support@openccc.net.

4. Error:  "The username you entered cannot be identified"

Why you are getting this error:

You may have logged in using your full email address instead of only your username. Your username is the first part of your campus email address. For example, if your email address is john.smith@campus.mccd.edu, your username would be john.smith as in the example below:

Your username is:  john.smith

Your username is not:  john.smith@campus.mccd.edu

What to do:

Login with your username and password. If you continue to have trouble logging in, contact the Merced College Student HelpDesk.
