Merced College Student of the Month
Major: General Education
Interests: Gardening and road trips
Future Goals: Transfer to CSU Stanislaus
Nominating Instructor: Mary Bergquist
Ms. Mary Serbanich was selected as outstanding student for December 2003. She is in her fifth semester at Merced College, and has been maintaining a stellar GPA, which, incidentally, earned her a place in the academic honor society Phi Theta Kappa.
Mary has been praised by her instructors for her excellent class work. She not only receives grades that are far above the rest thanks to her ability to analyze and apply learned concepts, but also is an inspiration to those who surround her. Mary Bergquist, instructor of communications, states that she is impressed by "her ability to think and apply in class, to actually listen and respond thoughtfully to others", and that this skill "has truly influenced other students to try to do the same."
Mary's future plans focus on obtaining an AA in general education, then transferring to CSU Stanislaus where she eventually would like to pursue an MA or Ph.D. in psychology or social science.
Mary has no problems filling her free time meaningfully. When she doesn't study, she assists her children, seven of them ranging from 7 to 15 years of age, with their various activities such as cheerleading, gymnastics, and karate. Whatever little time may be left after that is filled with gardening and road trips with her husband.
