Julio Marquez has been selected as the April Student of the Month.  Julio is from Mexico and currently resides in LeGrand.  He graduated with honors at his preparatory school in Mexico.  After spending one semester taking ESL classes he began attending Merced College in June 2002.  Julio has maintained an impressive GPA of over 3.5 while at Merced College and taking an average of 14 units per semester.  Julio has worked in the Tutorial Center and been able to assist other students, he is also a member of the Phi Theta Kappa, the campus honors society.  Isabel Cambridge, EOPS Counselor nominated Julio and comments that she was immediately impressed with the discipline and initiative she saw in Julio,  "he exhibited a determination to master his new English skills and although it was not always easy to communicate, he never gave up and constantly asked for advice to make his academic and sociocultural experience more meaningful and effective."

"Merced College has been my road to success" states Julio. "Without financial assistance I would not have been able to pursue my education." He also believes the teachers and office staff are all committed and hardworking with a highly developed sense of personal service and have helped him to achieve his goals.  Julio plans to transfer this fall to CSU Stanislaus to obtain his Bachelor's degree in history. He would like to one day teach and continue his education path to earn his Master's degree.

Julio appreciates the diversified student body at Merced College which encompasses young, old, married, single and physically challenged. He believes all have different cultural backgrounds and provide enrichment to the college experience.

In Julio's spare time he enjoys drawing, playing guitar, taking dance lessons or hanging out with friends.  One of the activities he finds most fulfilling is "taking my two little brothers for a car or bike ride and spending time together."

Congratulations to Julio!  He receives a special parking pass for the month, a check for $50, and  a certificate presentation at the May Merced College Board of Trustees meeting.
