OUTSTANDING STUDENT FOR APRIL 2010
Caleb Hampton has been chosen as
the Merced College Outstanding Student for the month of April.
He was nominated by Merced College professors Michael Lorenz and
Stephanie Martin-Ward.
Hampton was born in California
and has lived in Merced for the past fourteen years. He has been at
Merced College since the fall of 2007, where he has pursued his two
great interests, music and history. He is a member of the Merced College
Trio, and has, under the direction of Professor John Albano, played
alongside the College Jazz Band a number of times.
He has worked on campus in
various tutorial settings; the Writing Center, the Tutorial Center, and
Study Central, while still maintaining a 4.0 GPA.
"Working with fellow students has
allowed me to share my own experiences and knowledge and is readying me
for my long term goal of earning a degree in history and teaching in a
college setting," states Hampton.
"Merced College is preparing me for transfer to another
university, potentially CSU Stanislaus, and for 'life after school' as
well."
Professor Lorenz states that he
has had the pleasure of having Hampton in four of his history classes.
"In each of the classes his academic performance was outstanding --
among the best students I have ever taught," says Lorenz. "His mind is
razor sharp as he amply displays in class discussions, essays, research,
exams, and oral presentations. Over the years I have had other students
equal in ability to Caleb, but what makes Caleb truly special is his
affect on his fellow students and the class atmosphere."
Professor Martin-Ward states that
"Caleb is especially good with many Basic Skills Students who seek help
in Study Central. He also
embodies the 'community' spirit of the community college setting.
Whether it’s helping to fix broken tables, clean keyboards or restocking
supplies, he is always the first to volunteer to help out." |
