Philosophy and Rock Music
Course Description
This seminar will discuss and analyze traditional philosophical topics through the use of classic rock music. Topics will include Self-identity and Alienation, Friendship and Community, Hedonism and Individualism, Freedom and Determinism, Religion and Mysticism. There will be music by such classic rock icons as Bob Dylan, the Beatles, the Doors, Janis Joplin, the Grateful Dead and Led Zeppelin, along with songs from many other bands and musicians. Several classes will include the screening of episodes from the rare PBS documentary series that traces the history of rock music from its beginnings in American blues through many of its later transformations.
A highlight of the semester will be a fieldtrip to the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. This free festival features several stages of continuous music from many genres. On past field trips we have seen performances by Robert Plant, Kris Kristofferson, Elvis Costello, Merle Haggard, Carla Thomas, John Kay, and Hugh Laurie, among many others.

Students will delve into thought-provoking subjects, including self-identity and alienation, friendship and community, hedonism and individualism, freedom and determinism, as well as religion and mysticism. These philosophical inquiries are enriched through the lyrics and themes of classic rock songs.

Several classes will include the screening of episodes from a rare PBS documentary series that traces the history of rock music. This visual component enhances the educational experience by providing historical context and showcasing the evolution of the genre.

Real-World Engagement
A highlight of the semester is the field trip to the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. This free festival offers students the chance to immerse themselves in a diverse range of musical genres and experience live performances by renowned artists.
